Chinese President Xi Jinping attended the opening ceremony of the Global Leaders' Meeting on Women in Beijing on Monday morning and delivered a keynote speech.

He said that women have truly held up "half the sky" in China's economic and social development.

Highlighting their achievements, Xi noted that women now make up over 40 percent of China's employed population, more than half of all entrepreneurs in the internet industry, and over 60 percent of medalists in the past four Summer Olympic Games.

In the new era, Chinese women are participating in every aspect of national and social governance with unprecedented confidence and vitality, Xi noted. "On the new journey of Chinese modernization, every woman is a star."
