Marcelo Vergaray, an agricultural engineer from Peru, is writing his story with China through sweet blueberries.
After graduating in 2015, Vergaray joined a Chilean berry enterprise. In 2017, he came to China for the first time and spent a year studying Chinese at a university. The experience inspired him to pursue a career in China, where he later joined his company's project in Yunnan. He is now a production manager at Hortifrut and Joyvio, a joint venture agricultural technology company in Mengzi City, Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture in southwest China's Yunnan Province, where he oversees blueberry plantations.
The natural environment in Mengzi provides ideal conditions for blueberry cultivation. Vergaray and his team have not only introduced new cultivation technologies and blueberry varieties, but have also worked to improve the varieties and enhance fruit quality to better meet the demands of the Chinese market.
