Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet on Tuesday in Beijing. Bachelet came to China for the Global Leaders' Meeting on Women.
She previously served as the first Executive Director of UN Women and as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. During the meeting, Wang said that Ms. Bachelet is a world-renowned stateswoman and an old friend of the Chinese people.
He expressed hope that she would continue to make positive efforts towards the United Nations, as well as for world peace and stability.
Wang noted that while the UN needs reform, the purpose should be to strengthen it by upholding the UN Charter, protecting its authority, and fully respecting its central role.
He added that history and facts will demonstrate the world's movement toward multipolarity, and that the UN will create a better future for humanity.
Bachelet stated that Chile and China share a deep-rooted friendship. She fully agreed with Chinese President Xi Jinping's call to work together toward building a community with a shared future for mankind and to jointly create a better future for humanity.
She also expressed hope to collaborate with China in strengthening the role of the United Nations through reform and addressing global challenges together.
