China has put into operation the world's first telescope dedicated to observing solar magnetic fields in the mid-infrared wavelength. The telescope, known as the Accurate Infrared Magnetic Field Measurements of the Sun (AIMS) is located in the Lenghu township in northwest China's Qinghai Province, at an average altitude of about 4,000 meters. The AIMS telescope fills a global research gap and will support studies on solar eruptions and space weather forecasting.
