World's largest single-unit solar power project breaks ground

Construction has begun on Cosin Solar's 350-megawatt tower-type concentrated solar power (CSP) project in Golmud city, northwest China's Qinghai Province – the largest single-unit CSP facility in the world.

With a total investment of 5.44 billion yuan (about $763 million), the plant will use China's self-developed molten salt energy storage technology. Three solar receiver towers will collect and store heat, which will then be used to drive a single 350-megawatt steam turbine. This design enables the plant to generate reliable, around-the-clock electricity.

The project is expected to be fully connected to the power grid by the end of September 2027. Once operational, it will supply around 960 million kilowatt-hours of clean electricity annually.
