When Chilean winemaker Maria Ponce arrived in northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in 2021, she planned to stay only six months. But the land beneath the Helan Mountains changed her mind.
With its abundant sunshine and striking day–night temperature difference, the eastern foothills of the Helan Mountains in Ningxia offered Maria something rare – the chance to create a new expression of wine, a "Ningxia expression." Despite challenges, she sees her experience as a valuable opportunity to learn and share knowledge with the world.
Amid the lush greenery at the foot of the Helan Mountains, Maria has developed a deep affection for Ningxia – for both its land and the fruits it yields.
As of May, Ningxia had cultivated 30 well-known wine import and export enterprises. In 2024, the region's wine exports reached 13.75 million yuan (about $1.92 million).
