"Wozzeck," an opera in three acts by Austrian composer Alban Berg, is set to make its Chinese debut at the Poly Theater in Beijing.

Director Johan Simons stated that this is his fourth time directing "Wozzeck," with the previous three productions being stage plays, and this has marked his first time directing an operatic version of "Wozzeck."

The director revealed at the end of each act of this opera, child actors will appear on stage. "The theme of children is very important to me," he said, adding that the children's costumes are very distinctive, featuring a wide array of colors and styles. Some resemble angels, some look like demons and others wear puppet heads resembling horses.

World-renowned conductor Maestro Charles Dutoit will hold the baton for the performance. Dutoit, an old friend of the Beijing Music Festival, explained "Wozzeck" is likely one of the most important operatic works of the 21st century, adding Berg spent seven years composing this opera.

The Austrian composer completed the script in 1917, and the full musical score was finished in 1920. It premiered at the Berlin State Opera on December 4, 1925. This year marks the centennial anniversary of the opera's creation.
