The morin khuur – or "horse-head fiddle" in Inner Mongolian – originated from the lives and beliefs of nomadic herders, and said to reflect a herdsman's longing for his lost horse. Among the Mongols, this traditional bowed stringed instrument is central to rituals, festivals, and hospitality, and is regarded as "the soul of the steppe."
