Before the applause: How Algeria helped China return to the UN

On October 25, 1971, the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 2758, restoring the lawful seat of the People's Republic of China. The hall erupted in applause – a moment marking justice, friendship and a United Nations for all. Before that historic applause echoed through the UN hall, a quiet but determined diplomacy was at work. Algeria, under the leadership of President Houari Boumediene and Ambassador Noureddine Djoudi, rallied developing nations to support China's rightful return to the United Nations.
