Japan's Daiki Hashimoto picked up his third consecutive men's all-round title, with China's Zhang Boheng finishing as runner-up, at the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Wednesday.
Hashimoto and Zhang, who ranked first and third in qualifying, competed in the same rotation group in the final, beginning with the floor exercise and cycling through the pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar.
Zhang impressed on the rings with a high-difficulty routine and solid landing, climbing from seventh place to second. A key turning point came during the fifth rotation, as Japan's rising star Shinnosuke Oka fell during his floor exercise performance, dropping out of medal contention.
Defending champion Hashimoto extended his lead with a clean parallel bars routine, while Zhang made a minor mistake that left him about 0.4 points behind the Japanese gymnast. On the final apparatus, the horizontal bar, Zhang committed another slight error but recovered quickly to close out his routine.
Hashimoto, competing last, delivered a composed and precise performance, finishing with a perfectly-stuck landing that sealed his third straight men's all-round gold medal, with an overall score of 85.131 points.
