Nanjing, a major center of manufacturing, education and culture in southern China, and Daejeon, a South Korean city renowned for its pivotal role in the country's cutting-edge science and technology, established their sister-city relationship in 1994. Sharing a common leading role in their countries' technology and innovation sectors, the partnership between the two cities has flourished through continuous cooperation and exchanges.

In 2024, Nanjing and Daejeon signed a memorandum of cooperation to further deepen sister-city exchanges, including enhancing collaboration in areas such as scientific and technological innovation and talent cultivation. In the same year, Nanjing sent a friendly delegation to Daejeon at the city's invitation to attend the "2024 Daejeon Zero O'clock Festival" and the commemorative event marking the 30th anniversary of their sister-city relationship.
