Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Monday called for strengthening unity and upholding multilateralism in his address to the Lanting Forum on Improving Global Governance to Build a Community with a Shared Future for Humanity in Beijing.

Wang said the Global Governance Initiative (GGI) is another major public good contributed by China to the world, noting it meets global needs and reflects common aspirations of humanity.

Together with the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative, the GGI provides stability and certainty in a turbulent world, Wang noted. These initiatives have received clear support from more than 140 countries and international organizations, said Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs. He said the clearest message of the GGI is to gather the strength of unity, its firmest stance is to uphold the banner of multilateralism, and its most desired vision is to pursue a fair future.

Wang urged all countries to jointly defend the UN Charter and the fundamental norms of international relations, and to fulfill their international obligations with full goodwill. He also called on nations to work together to advance common development and enhance the effectiveness of global governance; unite to address pressing global challenges and remedy existing deficiencies; actively respond to the demands of the Global South and help make the global governance system more just and equitable; and fully leverage the role of diverse actors to build stronger synergy in global governance.

Noting that the fourth plenary session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China recently concluded with the adoption of recommendations for the 15th Five-Year Plan, Wang said a China that continues on its path to modernization will create broad opportunities for common development worldwide. He added that a China committed to peace and development will shoulder greater responsibilities in advancing human progress.
