Record-breaking hurricane Melissa hits Jamaica and makes landfall

00:51

Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Jamaica on October 28, becoming the strongest storm ever to hit the Caribbean nation of 2.8 million people.

Landing near New Hope, about 60 km from Montego Bay, Melissa brought 185 mph (295 kph) winds — a Category 5 storm. The storm's moving path is tearing across Jamaica's mountains, triggering landslides and floods as it heads toward Cuba. Melissa now ranks among the top three most intense hurricanes in Caribbean history.
