The first-ever cross-boundary torch relay for China's National Games kicked off on Sunday, taking place simultaneously in four cities of the Greater Bay Area – Hong Kong, Macao, Guangzhou and Shenzhen.
One highlight of this year's torch relay was the integration of cutting-edge robotics.
The Kuavo robot, an open-source humanoid robot developed by Shenzhen-based Leju Robotics, participated as a special torchbearer in Shenzhen. It held the 1.6-kilogram torch and completed the baton handover between the second and third relay legs.
The robot was named after Kuafu, a giant in Chinese mythology who chased the sun indefatigably.

Kuavo is the world's first humanoid robot equipped with 5G-Advanced (5G-A) technology. Designed for a wide range of applications, from household use to industrial settings, it is China's first humanoid robot capable of jumping and walking on various terrains.
The research team has implemented several technical innovations to ensure the success of the relay process.
The robot's motion control algorithm has been optimized, significantly improving its resistance to disturbances and its adaptability to complex terrain. This allows it to run steadily and naturally, even while carrying the torch.
Meanwhile, based on the 5G-A network, an "information superhighway" has been created for seamless, real-time video streaming from its first-person perspective. This enabled accurate remote control of the robot, without the need for an on-site operator.
Unveiled in December 2023, Kuavo has already been featured in various high-profile events. This year, it served as an assistant to reporters during the country's Two Sessions in March, cheered on athletes at the Asian Cup table tennis tournament in Shenzhen, and appeared at the 2025 Shenzhen (Longhua) – Milan Lifestyle Week opening ceremony, wearing traditional Miao ethnic clothing.
