China stated on Monday that dialogue, rather than pressure, is the appropriate way to resolve disagreements between the world's two largest economies, after U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that Washington might increase tariffs if Beijing continued to restrict rare earths exports.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told a regular briefing that China's regulators have repeatedly clarified the country's rare earths export control policy. She also mentioned that the recent China-U.S. economic and trade consultations in Kuala Lumpur demonstrated that dialogue and cooperation are the proper ways to resolve issues.

Threats and pressure do not help solve problems, Mao said, emphasizing that both sides should follow the important consensus reached by their leaders at their Busan meeting and work toward bringing more stability to China-U.S. trade relations and the global economy.
