Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist, was elected mayor of New York City on November 4, becoming the first Muslim to lead America's largest city. His victory marked a swift rise from a state lawmaker to a nationally recognized Democratic leader.

Mamdani defeated former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent, after losing the Democratic nomination earlier this year. The election was part of a series of Democratic victories across key states, with Abigail Spanberger and Mikie Sherrill winning gubernatorial races in Virginia and New Jersey, respectively.
