Recently, Greig Mordue, an associate professor at McMaster University, said in an interview that China represents a direction worth pursuing in the electric vehicle industry. He noted that as the world moves rapidly into the electrification of mobility, North America is not progressing as quickly as the rest of the world, while China has emerged as the clear leader.

According to his research, over the past decade China has generated automotive patents at roughly five times the rate of the United States. Mordue argued that although the U.S. auto industry may sustain itself for a while without innovating as aggressively as its competitors, it will struggle to maintain global leadership in the long run.

He called on Canada and other North American economies to acknowledge China's innovation strengths and to seek shared progress through engagement and cooperation, rather than risk long-term losses through confrontation.
