There was a time when the residents of Jiewen Village in Wuping County, Fujian would, if they needed cash, simply head up into the mountains to cut down trees to sell. Since it was unclear who owned the mountains, they weren't properly managed. In June 2002, Xi Jinping, who was Governor of Fujian Province at the time, visited the village. He subsequently decided that the individual villagers would each be allocated ownership of a plot of land, which they could use as they saw fit to boost their income. Today, Jiewen Village has been transformed. Villagers, by promoting the under-forest economy and cultivating specialist crops such as lingzhi mushrooms, are firmly set on the path to prosperity.
