A groundbreaking men's cycling individual road race at China's 15th National Games got underway in Zhuhai, south China's Guangdong Province, on Saturday morning.
The riders were due to trek through a course covering 231.8 kilometers and stretching across all three competition zones – Guangdong Province, Hong Kong SAR (Special Administrative Region) and Macao SAR – as the only event that connects the three host regions during the Games.
The riders will need to pass through customs and immigration checkpoints on the course. In order not to interrupt the race, seamless customs clearance has been introduced to the competition.
Athletes wear wristbands embedded with chips that will be read by RFID scanners installed at special pre-checkpoints. This setup allows automatic registration of each rider's passage in real-time.
Such a seamless customs clearance at a speed of 40 kilometers per hour shows the efficient collaboration among the three competition zones.
