China to use real-world 'scenarios' to help grow new technologies

China will use real-world projects – or what government officials call "scenarios" – to accelerate the growth new technologies, according to a government press briefing held in Beijing on Monday.

The country also plans to revise outdated regulations to make it easier for companies to innovate. This is all part of an effort to build a stronger, more modern economy.

To give press a clearer picture of how such "scenarios" work, Li Chunlin, vice chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission, cited the ongoing 15th National Games as an example. Li said the electricity used for opening ceremony was provided by a new solution called "highly reliable grid + new-type storage," replacing the traditional, diesel-based solution to reduce carbon emission.

"This is the scenario of applying new technology to key events," Li said.

At the press briefing, officials from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced five key areas in "scenario-based" cultivation:

1. The "5G+" applications, specifically by constructing 5G-powered factories and promoting integrated solutions like quality inspection with computer vision and remote equipment control.

2. Expanding "AI+" empowerment to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) across all stages of manufacturing, including R&D, production and maintenance.

3. Accelerating "Robot+" applications, prioritizing the deployment of industrial and humanoid robots in complex environments such as factories, mines and emergency response.

4. Upgrading the "Industrial Internet+" ecosystem, creating an enhanced "5G + Industrial Internet," and fostering its collaborative development with key industry chains.

5. Broadening "BeiDou+" applications, speeding up the satellite navigation system's integration into intelligent transportation and smart logistics.

Li emphasized that fundamental reforms are needed to dismantle institutional barriers and optimize resource allocation for scenario-based innovation.
