Jiangsu rowers scoop up men's quadruple sculls gold, Guangdong bag silver, at 15th National Games

Rowing provided an early flourish at China's 15th National Games on Monday in Guangzhou.

In the men's quadruple sculls final, which awarded the first gold after Sunday night's opening ceremony, Jiangsu's quartet of Cai Pengpeng, Zhang Hanwen, Zang Ha and Zhang Zihao took the title in 4:12.24, with hosts Guangdong settling for silver.

The women's quadruple sculls final saw Henan's crew, featuring Olympic gold medalist Lyu Yang, Liu Youfei, Han Mengyao and Xu Yingying, cross the line first to claim the top spot on the podium.

Later in the day, the swimming program featured Zhejiang's 4×100m freestyle relay squad – boasting Olympic champion Sun Yang, Wu Shengkai, Hong Jinquan and Xie Yichen – qualifying for the final in 3:16.84. Sun completed the second leg in 49.89 seconds.

After the race, the 33-year-old Sun said: "I'm satisfied with my performance. I will give everything, for individual or team events, whenever the veterans are needed, I'll give my all."
