U.S. President Donald Trump said it "looks like we're getting very close" to an end to the government shutdown on Sunday, as the standoff reached day 40 – the longest in the country's history.
The Senate voted on Sunday night in favor of advancing a bill that would pair a short-term funding measure with three full-year appropriations bills.
The proposal will require House approval before heading back to Trump for his signature.
