Resonance between Eastern and Western poetry lingers at Chengdu park

CGTN

The resonance between Eastern and Western poetry lingered at Wangjiang Tower Park's memorial hall for ancient Chinese poet Xue Tao in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, where an activity was held to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Spanish poet Antonio Machado on Tuesday. The commemoration was attended by Queen Letizia of Spain, who is on a state visit to China with King Felipe VI of Spain from November 10 to 13.

During the activity, classic works of Xue Tao and Antonio Machado, who despite geographical and temporal distances share similar thoughts on the relationship between humans and nature, were recited by artists of the two countries in both Chinese and Spanish. This is an example of the close economic and cultural exchanges between Sichuan and Spain.

While touring the park, including a bamboo forest, Queen Letizia was interested in learning about the life stories of Xue Tao, who spent most of her life in Chengdu and was later remembered as one of the four most well-known female poets of the Tang Dynasty (618-907).

Antonio Machado, a famous realistic poet during the 20th century in Spain, was studied in China for his impact on Spanish literature. In his lifetime, he published a number of popular anthologies of his poems, some of which have been translated and published in China.
