As early winter arrives, flocks of wild mandarin ducks – a second-class protected wild animal in China – are seen swimming, foraging and playing freely on the shimmering waters of Chaoyang Reservoir in Yinjiang Tujia and Miao Autonomous County, southwest China's Guizhou Province.

According to long-term observations by local reservoir rangers and forest protection teams, the number of overwintering mandarin ducks here has increased significantly compared with previous years, with a maximum of over 100.

The notable growth in the wild mandarin duck population is closely linked to Yinjiang's unremitting ecological protection efforts in recent years. Local authorities have protected wildlife habitats by establishing nature reserves and ecological corridors, and carrying out closed-hill forest restoration and farmland-to-forest conversion. Forest rangers also conduct regular habitat inspections and protection to ensure the proper preservation of these precious natural resources.
