Hundreds of Japanese citizens gathered outside the Prime Minister's Office in Tokyo on November 15, protesting against Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's controversial remarks and actions. Demonstrators chanted slogans such as "Retract your statement and apologize," "Takaichi, step down," and "A leader who cannot handle diplomacy is unfit to be prime minister," calling for her immediate resignation. At a Diet meeting last week, Takaichi claimed that the Japanese Self-Defense Force could exercise the right of collective self-defense if the Chinese mainland "uses military forces against Taiwan." Despite China's serious démarches and protests, she refused to retract her remarks, which imply the possibility of armed intervention in the Taiwan Strait.
