The 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference, or COP30, entered its second week on Monday as the high-level segment officially opened. Senior representatives in attendance included Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, president of the 80th UN General Assembly Annalena Baerbock, UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell, and COP30 President Andre Correa do Lago.

Alckmin urged all parties to take concrete action to address climate change, reaffirming Brazil's commitments to advancing a just energy transition and eliminating illegal deforestation by 2030. He stressed that Brazil will maintain the progress it has already made in reducing deforestation by 50 percent.

Do Lago said negotiations at the conference will be accelerated to ensure substantive progress before it concludes. He expressed hope that parties would actively advance the negotiation process, aiming to produce an initial set of proposals by November 19 and a second set by November 21, laying the groundwork for more ambitious outcomes.

He noted that countries will place particular focus on key issues such as climate finance and efforts to reduce and phase out the use of fossil fuels.
