The United Nations' official stance on the Taiwan issue is based on UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, according to UN Secretary-General's Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric on November 17. He reaffirmed that the UN's official terminology regarding Taiwan has not changed and that all member states should support and adhere to the UN Charter. These comments followed a CMG reporter asking Dujarric to respond to Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's recent remarks on Taiwan.
Resolution 2758 clearly states that the People's Republic of China is the sole legitimate representative of China to the United Nations, and that the Government of the People's Republic of China is the only legitimate representative of China to the United Nations.
