The film "Blue Brave: The Legend of Taiwan (Formosa) in 1895" is one of China's best-known works reflecting the pain of Japanese colonial rule over Taiwan. Set after the First Sino-Japanese War, when Taiwan was ceded to Japan under the Treaty of Shimonoseki, it tells the solemn and tragic story of Taiwan's volunteer army – led by key leader Wu Tangxing and others – rising up to resist the Japanese military's takeover. The film profoundly shows Japan's violent occupation at the start of its colonial rule, and the deep sorrow of Taiwan compatriots over losing their homeland.
