November 15 is Miao New Year. At the 600-year-old Miaowangcheng (Ancient Miao Castle) Scenic Area in Songtao Miao Autonomous County, southwest China's Guizhou Province, Miao people in vibrant traditional costumes gathered with tourists from various places to celebrate the festival through singing and dancing.
A beloved traditional event for the local Miao community, Miao New Year is the most important festival of the year for the ethnic group. It's a grand celebration that honors the harvest, pays tribute to ancestors, and expresses gratitude to nature. During the festival, visitors can enjoy intangible cultural heritage shows, hands-on folk activities, and special festive rituals– all designed to let them fully immerse themselves in the rich, joyful New Year spirit of the Miao region.
First constructed in the early Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty, Miaowangcheng is more than just a scenic spot. It serves as a film and television shooting base in western China, a recognized "Beautiful Leisure Village" of China, and one of Guizhou's most renowned ancient Miao military stockades. Nestled at the border of Guizhou, Hunan and Chongqing, this well-preserved ancient castle blends culture, military defense and traditional architecture into one unique heritage site.
