In an exclusive interview with CGTN Sports Scene earlier this week, Chao Kuok Wai, Director of the Sports Development Department at Macao SAR's Sports Bureau, highlighted the significance of the 15th National Games as a pivotal moment for promoting sports participation and development in the region.

As one of the three co-hosts—alongside Guangdong and Hong Kong SAR—Macao SAR assembled its largest-ever delegation for the event, comprising over 600 members. This includes more than 400 athletes competing in 23 competitive sports and 14 mass participation events, as well as nearly 200 representatives for the 9th National Special Olympic Games. "Macao SAR places tremendous importance on this edition of the National Games," Chao emphasized.

Chao underscored the National Games as a prime opportunity to advance public fitness and sports infrastructure. To capitalize on this, Macao organized 100 mass-sports activities this year, marking a 64% increase from the previous year's 61 events. Additionally, all public fitness facilities were made freely accessible during the Games to encourage broader participation. "Looking ahead, we plan to sustain this momentum by hosting more activities, constructing temporary sports venues, and upgrading existing facilities," Chao stated, expressing optimism about growing citizen engagement in sports.

The director also discussed efforts to preserve and promote Macao's diverse sporting heritage. Despite its small size, Macao boasts 57 sports associations under the bureau's supervision, spanning disciplines such as martial arts, dragon boat racing, football, basketball, table tennis, and swimming. To support these associations, the bureau has introduced five financial aid programs in recent years. A notable initiative includes the co-founding of a youth martial arts school with the Wushu Association to nurture young talent and ensure the sport's longevity. For dragon boat racing, an annual international invitational tournament has been established to safeguard and transmit this traditional practice.

Through these strategies, Macao aims to solidify its position as a dynamic hub for sports development and public wellness, leveraging the National Games as a springboard for lasting progress.
