The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) reaffirmed its commitment to future-proofing its port as an international shipping center during this year's Hong Kong Maritime Week, outlining a clear roadmap for advancing its green transformation and enhancing logistics competitiveness.
Speaking at a policy session, Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan said HK SAR government is taking concrete steps to address structural challenges in the logistics sector, including the inland relocation of mainland manufacturing, intensifying regional competition and labor shortages. She emphasized that the government is "putting actions into place," working closely with industry through the Hong Kong Logistics Development Council to expand connectivity and bolster Hong Kong's key role in global supply chains.
Chan noted that Hong Kong is extending freight links to major inland production hubs such as Chengdu and Chongqing, supported by enhanced air cargo and rail services to capture rising e-commerce demand. At the same time, the government is assisting the industry in diversifying markets amid global trade uncertainties.
Green transition remains a central theme of this year's Maritime Week. Chan highlighted the city's Green Shipping Fuel Bunkering Action Plan, which provides a structured pathway to achieving the International Maritime Organization's 2050 decarbonization target. Hong Kong has already conducted LNG bunkering operations and is preparing for its first green methanol service, supported by planned fuel storage facilities in Tsing Yi.
Digitalization and talent development are also being accelerated through expanded training initiatives and subsidy schemes to help logistics companies adopt smart systems and ESG practices. Hong Kong's multimodal efficiency continues to improve, with the Hong Kong-Dongguan Logistics Park set to extend its seamless transshipment model to container terminals next year.
Chan said Hong Kong will continue to align with national development strategies and deepening cooperation with global maritime partners, reinforcing the city's contribution to sustainable and resilient international shipping.
