Expert: PM Takaichi's remarks violate Japan's Constitution, historical pacts

In a recent interview with CGTN, Victor Gao, vice president of the Center for China and Globalization, offered a critical analysis of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's recent remarks, calling them "very serious and dangerous threats" against China's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Gao points out that Takaichi's stance fundamentally violates commitments and principles in three norms: historical commitments, political pacts, and domestic law. He said that Takaichi's remarks are a denial of the post-war international order and have severely undermined the political foundation of China-Japan relations. To promote the normalization of diplomatic ties, Japan has, since 1971, unconditionally committed in multiple documents that it recognizes there is only one China in the world. Takaichi's rhetoric betrays this commitment.

Gao notes that Takaichi's threat to dispatch Japanese forces to Taiwan is a direct violation of the Japanese Constitution, which prohibits sending military personnel abroad for combat missions. He points out that such actions risk invoking the UN Charter's "enemy state clause," potentially authorizing military action against Japan if it is deemed a threat to China.
