China on Wednesday said Japan's claim that its position on the Taiwan question remains "unchanged" is "far from enough," urging Tokyo to clearly state whether it still upholds the one-China principle and to correct its recent erroneous remarks.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning made the comments at a regular press briefing in response to a Japanese Cabinet-approved statement issued on Tuesday. The statement asserted that Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's recent remarks in parliament did not alter Japan's long-held position, adding that Tokyo would "comprehensively assess all information" depending on the situation and saw "no need for revision or further study" of its current stance.
Mao said China has repeatedly made clear its firm position regarding Takaichi's erroneous comments on Taiwan. She reiterated that Takaichi's remarks seriously violated the spirit of the four China-Japan political documents, undermining the political foundation of bilateral ties and challenging the postwar international order.
Takaichi's remarks had drawn criticism both within Japan and internationally, Mao noted.
She stressed that simply repeating that Japan's stance is consistent or unchanged does not address the fundamental issue.
"What the Chinese side – and the international community – needs to know is: What exactly is this 'consistent position' Japan claims to hold?" Mao asked. "Does Japan still adhere to the one-China principle? Japan should give an honest, accurate and complete clarification for its so-called 'consistent position' on the Taiwan question."
Mao added that Japan's Cabinet statement not only failed to correct the previous misstep, but again made unwarranted comments over Taiwan, which she called a further interference in China's internal affairs.
"Taiwan is China's Taiwan. How the Taiwan question is resolved and how national reunification is achieved are entirely China's internal affairs," Mao said. "Japan has no right to make irresponsible remarks, let alone intervene."
She once again urged the Japanese side to take China's solemn position seriously, genuinely reflect and correct its mistakes, withdraw the erroneous statements as soon as possible, and honor its commitments to China with concrete actions.
