Chinese Foreign Ministry urges Japan to ensure safety of Chinese citizens

China has noted a recent rise in criminal cases targeting Chinese citizens in Japan and urged Tokyo to take concrete steps to safeguard the safety of Chinese citizens and institutions in the country, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Wednesday.

At a regular press briefing, Mao said Japanese police last week arrested five suspects allegedly involved in assaults against Chinese citizens in Japan. She said that large amounts of extreme and threatening rhetoric against China have appeared on Japanese online platforms, while the Chinese embassy and consulates in Japan have in recent weeks been repeatedly harassed by right-wing groups both offline and online.

"We urge the Japanese side to take China's concerns seriously and take effective measures to ensure the safety of Chinese citizens and institutions in Japan," Mao said.
