In his speech at the G20 Summit in South Africa, Finnish President Alexander Stubb termed the meeting a crucial symbol of multilateralism. He stressed that upholding multilateralism requires first addressing core inequities. Stubb pointed out that the global order is undergoing profound changes, with power centers shifting eastward and southward, and a clear trend toward multipolarity. However, the current power structure of multilateral institutions, rooted in the 1945 geopolitical landscape, is deeply unfair and ill-suited for today's world. He explicitly called on the West to face this reality, arguing that while multipolarity grants more power to nations, its transactional nature can easily lead to conflicts. Only by redistributing power and reforming multilateral institutions in line with contemporary realities can multilateralism be put back on track, he stressed.
