Each evening in Wuzhishan, Hainan, the pulsating beats of Chinese pop classics and international disco hits find a perfect home. This immersive performance takes place on Hongqi Road and Jiefang Road in today's area of Tongza Town. The city of Wuzhishan was also formerly known as Tongza, a name derived from the Li ethnic language and meaning "field in the valley." It once served as the administrative center of the Hainan Li-Miao Autonomous Prefecture, and the political, economic and cultural hub of south-central Hainan during the 1980s. To this day, this block still retains many old buildings and structures from that era – a perfect stage for this throwback performance. Music blurs the lines between performers and audience members as everyone spontaneously forms dance circles in the tropical night air.
