The future of Palestinians has come into focus once again as the world marked the annual International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People on Saturday.

Despite the initiation of the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire in early October, the fragile truce in the devastated enclave remains tenuous, with ongoing tensions and little progress toward a long-term resolution. Negotiations for the second phase of the ceasefire have yet to formally begin, while Israeli airstrikes and ground military operations continue.

In the West Bank, military operations by the Israeli military have been ongoing since the beginning of this year. Attacks by Israeli settlers on Palestinian residents have increased in frequency.

Early November, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a statement that "Since 2006, OCHA has documented over 9,600 such attacks. About 1,500 of them took place just this year, roughly 15 percent of the total."

On the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, the UN held a special event on Tuesday to express support for the Palestinian people.

During the event, Chef de Cabinet of the UN chief Courtenay Rattray reaffirmed the right of the Palestinian people to establish their own state. He called for an end to the illegal occupation of Palestinian territories, as confirmed by the International Court of Justice and the General Assembly, and urged irreversible progress toward a two-state solution.

On the same day, China sent a congratulatory message to the UN commemorative meeting, reiterating its steadfast stance in support of the Palestinian people's just struggle to restore their national rights and stressing efforts should be anchored in the pursuit of a two-state solution to promote an early political settlement of the Palestinian issue.

China's position on the Palestinian issue is clear. It has repeatedly stated in multilateral platforms, including the UN, that the two-state solution is the only viable path to resolving the Palestinian issue, and that it is irreplaceable and non-negotiable.

As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China has all along called on the international community to work together to revive the two-state solution, support the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders, and ensure that Palestine becomes a full UN member.

In his recent speech at the UN Security Council, China's Permanent Representative to the UN, Fu Cong, emphasized that the international community must redouble efforts to advance the two-state solution, oppose any unilateral actions that undermine its foundation, and support the early realization of independent Palestinian statehood and its full UN membership.

China will continue to promote an early, comprehensive, just and lasting solution to the Palestinian question, Fu said.

Niu Xinchun, a professor at the China-Arab States Research Institute at Ningxia University, told CMG that China, the first non-Arab country to recognize the State of Palestine in 1988, has been a longstanding friend of the Palestinian people, consistently supporting their cause.

Acknowledging that the Gaza ceasefire is stuck in phase one and the question is still whether peace will be fully realized, Niu said China's congratulatory message to the commemorative meeting held special significance, showing China's determination to work with the international community to implement the two-state solution and push for a comprehensive, just and lasting resolution to the Palestinian issue.

Niu also stressed that only with the establishment of the Palestinian state, the full implementation of the two-state solution, and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza, can the Palestinian people truly achieve peace and stability.

In a show of support for the Palestinian people, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari stressed his nation's commitment to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on pre-June 1967 borders with Jerusalem as its capital.
