China's 2025 box office, including presales, has surpassed 48 billion yuan (about $6.78 billion) as of Sunday, according to data from ticketing platform Maoyan.

The 2025 box office has already eclipsed last year's total. According to the China Film Administration, China's box office revenue reached over 42.5 billion yuan (about $5.91 billion) in 2024.

Local films continue to dominate the market, with nine of the year's 10 top-grossing films being domestic productions. The films "Ne Zha 2," "Detective Chinatown 1900" and "Dead To Rights" rank as the top three.

Since 2025, China's film industry has been transitioning from a single box-office economy to a more diverse consumption ecosystem. By integrating film with tourism and initiatives like the "ticket-stub economy," films have become a new engine for stimulating consumption and driving economic growth.
