Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's recent erroneous remarks on China's Taiwan have drawn strong criticism within Japan. Keiko Itokazu, a former member of Japan's House of Councillors, said that Takaichi's erroneous remarks not only undermine regional peace but could also bring unbearable risks to Japan.
Itokazu said that such remarks should never have been made, as they constitute a clear interference in China's internal affairs. Takaichi is no longer qualified to serve as prime minister. The consequences of such remarks are serious, and Takaichi is urged to retract them as soon as possible.
Noting that China is Japan's largest trading partner, Itokazu pointed out that Takaichi's erroneous remarks have negatively affected Japan's economy.
Itokazu said that Japan's economy depends heavily on China, and a sharp decline in Chinese visitors, cruises and flights, has made retail and tourism-related industries suffer greatly. If this situation continues, the economy could face serious trouble. The true responsibility of Japan's prime minister is to maintain trade and people-to-people exchanges through friendly relations, achieving a win-win situation between China and Japan. If this cannot be done, Japan's economy could eventually collapse, and perhaps only then would Takaichi apologize. If Takaichi doesn't apologize soon, it may be too late to save the situation.
