A wave of Japanese cultural performances in China has been abruptly canceled following remarks on Taiwan made by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.
Bandai Namco recently confirmed the cancellation of its Bandai Namco Festival 2025 in Shanghai. Exhibition booths at the venue were already being dismantled, and cancellation notices were posted around the entrance. Many anime and gaming fans who were unaware of the announcement were turned away by security, though most expressed understanding.
Japanese artists including singer Otsuki Maki, Ayumi Hamasaki, and jazz pianist Hiromi Uehara also had concerts and public appearances in China canceled or postponed. Stage productions like the musical adaptation of "Sailor Moon" and comedy events by Yoshimoto Kogyo were also halted.
