Search and recovery efforts continue after the deadly fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po, China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, with the Hong Kong Police Force's Disaster Victim Identification Unit (DVIU) operating under tough conditions.
DVIU Head Cheng Ka-chun said on Friday that several types of equipment provided by the mainland have given crucial support to the mission.
Cheng noted that the exoskeleton suit has been particularly useful for officers responsible for carrying remains. With no power supply in the building, officers must climb more than 30 floors on foot with full gear on.
The exoskeleton helps reduce physical strain, especially when the officers are carrying remains, and makes their work more efficient.
Another key contribution is a professional lighting system. Cheng said the interior of the site is completely dark, and regular lighting is inadequate. The wearable system comes with white light and multiple brightness modes, enabling officers to illuminate narrow or cluttered areas. It significantly reduces the risk of missing critical spots and has become an essential tool for precise searches.
More than 30,000 items of equipment have been provided by mainland authorities for the emergency efforts at Wang Fuk Court, offering sustained support to the operation.
