China urges intl community to confront root causes of Palestinian issue

A senior Chinese diplomat on Friday called on the international community to confront the root causes of the Palestinian issue, take strong action, and correct the historical injustices suffered by the Palestinian people during a UN session.

The 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly adopted several resolutions regarding Palestine and the Middle East on Friday. The resolutions cover several aspects, including the operations of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, aid to Palestinian refugees and the occupied Palestinian territories. The United States and Israel voted against the resolutions.

Speaking before the General Assembly vote, Sun Lei, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, said China firmly supports the Palestinian people's just cause to restore their legitimate national rights and has long provided humanitarian and development assistance to Palestine.

The Palestinian issue is at the core of the Middle East issue and is related to international fairness and justice, as well as the regional situation, Sun said.

Sun added that China has consistently called for a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire in Gaza, urgent improvement of the humanitarian situation, and post-conflict governance and reconstruction in the Strip based on the principle that "the Palestinians governing Palestine."

He also called for a commitment to the two-state solution and an early political settlement of the Palestinian question.
