The Arab League on Sunday condemned the killing of civilians in Kalogi city, in Sudan's South Kordofan state, as war crimes, following a drone strike earlier this week that killed at least 114 people, including 63 children.
In a statement, the Cairo-based pan-Arab body described the attack as a blatant violation of international humanitarian law and a threat to Sudan's unity, calling for independent investigations and accountability.
The death toll from the strike, which occurred on Thursday, has risen to 114, with about 71 others injured, South Kordofan Governor Mohamed Ibrahim Abdel Karim said earlier Sunday, warning that the numbers could increase further.
Sudanese authorities have accused the opposition Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) of coordinating with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to carry out the strike, which they claim targeted a civilian area. However, neither the RSF nor the SPLM-N has commented on the strike.
Fighting between Sudan's army and the RSF, which erupted in April 2023, has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions, creating one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. UN agencies have warned that violence in the Kordofan region has recently escalated, causing large-scale displacement and civilian suffering.
