A magnitude-7.5 earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Honshu, Japan, on Monday at a depth of 50 kilometers, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) measured the quake at magnitude 7.6, saying it hit off Aomori Prefecture around 11:15 p.m. local time.

The JMA issued a tsunami warning for the prefectures of Hokkaido, Aomori and Iwate, saying the waves as high as three meters could hit Japan's northeastern coast.
