Israeli forces on Monday stormed the premises of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in East Jerusalem without authorization, conducting searches inside the compound, according to the Jerusalem Governorate, affiliated with the Palestinian Authority.

It said that Israeli police forces raided the headquarters, detained security guards and confiscated their phones. The Israeli flag was also raised atop the building.

"Israeli police cut off communication, making it impossible to know what is happening inside the compound," it added in the statement.

There was no immediate comment from Israeli police or UNRWA on the raid.

The raid comes two days after the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution to renew the UNRWA mandate for three years.

The compound had served as an UNRWA office since 1951, but the agency vacated it earlier this year following an Israeli government decision. Tel Aviv banned UNRWA's operations in Jerusalem under a law passed by its parliament.

On Monday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a statement strongly condemning Israel's actions, stressing that the compound "remains United Nations premises and is inviolable and immune from any other form of interference."

He noted that, as affirmed by the International Court of Justice, any action against UN property is prohibited under the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations.

Guterres urged Israel to immediately restore and uphold the inviolability of UNRWA facilities and refrain from further actions targeting UN premises, in line with its obligations under the UN Charter and international law.
