A magnitude-7.5 earthquake struck near the northeastern coast of Japan late on December 8, with a focal depth of 50 kilometers, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center. The latest reports indicate that at least 33 people have been injured in the disaster.

Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority confirmed on Tuesday that the quake caused about 450 liters of water to overflow from a spent fuel pool at a nuclear fuel reprocessing plant in Aomori Prefecture. The agency said that the water remained contained within the building and that no abnormalities have been detected at other nuclear facilities in the affected region.
