On December 4, the Taiwan authorities announced a one-year "provisional ban" on RedNote, a popular social media app from the Chinese mainland, citing cybersecurity concerns and a high number of fraud cases. The platform has over 3 million users in China's Taiwan region, with 70 percent from the post-90s generation, making it especially popular among young people. A spokesperson for China's Taiwan Affairs Office criticized the move, saying it deprives Taiwan residents – especially the youth – of their right to information and freedom of online expression, while also threatening the livelihoods of those who rely on RedNote for income.
