Beijing Children's Welfare Institute is the city's largest orphanage, home to about 300 children who were abandoned at birth. Ahead of Human Rights Day, CGTN was given a rare chance to meet some of the children there. Among them is 12-year-old Cen Yang. Born with severe hand impairments, he has grown into a prolific painter under the round-the-clock care of medical staff and teachers. More than 98 percent of institutionalized orphans in China live with medical or physical challenges. As living standards rise and healthcare coverage expands, the number of orphans nationwide has seen a sharp decline in recent years.
