A festive beat: Exploring Beijing's 'Dragon Drum' heritage

The pulse of drums and cymbals, the flare of fireworks, and the glow of lanterns all set the scene for welcoming the Chinese New Year. Bringing festive energy to the upcoming Spring Festival is the "Dragon Drum" performance from Qiyuan Village in Beijing's Changping District.

Rooted in the villagers' wishes to drive away misfortune and pray for peace, this traditional art form has been passed down for more than 280 years. It was officially recognized as part of Beijing's Municipal Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2007.
