December 13 marks China's National Memorial Day for the victims of the Nanjing Massacre. On this day in 1937, the invading Japanese army captured Nanjing and the atrocities began. Over the next six weeks, more than 300,000 Chinese civilians and unarmed soldiers were killed by the Japanese invaders. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. As of December 2025, only 24 survivors of the Nanjing Massacre are still alive.
